Overall I'm a little weird and I have the theory that we all look outside what we are inside. Like, I love weird movies, a movie with good content doesn't need to be flashy and/or full of CGI and famous names, ok, I love the so called Indie movies (but I swear I'm no hipster at all! I love new clothes and sky-high heels), mostly because they tell different stories, sometimes the same stories but in a different way, hey! at least they try! specially considering the lack of millions.
I don't mind watching blockbusters most of the time, but after so many years watching movies of all kinds my favorites are either animated, indie or from directors who sell well but don't care much about winning an Oscar or some other lame piece of metal (Glass is where it's at, ladies and gentlemen!). I'd always pick an indie movie I've never heard of before in my life over a well publicized, hundreds-of-millions-budged movie, just a personal choice.
Ok, indie movies are actually 'weird' but I do enjoy the 'underground' aspect of it. I've never been to good with mainstream deals, it's just so much publicity everywhere that by the time I have a chance to see the movie I'm not really excited anymore or sometimes I can get sick of seeing it everywhere that I'd rather wait to rent the movie or something. What can I say? I love surprises and the unexpected.
Another thing I've realized is that most adults are so worried about being 'adults' they forget how fun and awesome animated movies are. Of course not all of them are that way but they deserve a chance! Most 'adults' downplay those as 'kids movies' regardless, and don't bother on taking them seriously enough to at least pay attention, just because it's animated or based on a children's book; even if they're force to see it because they're taking a kid to the movies which, I think, is really sad (not taking children to the movies, the other thing). But it's because what I used as the headline is true! 'Adults' don't take kids seriously and they think they're like little retards, that's why when they have kids they're like 'ZOMG!!! they CAN think, WTF?!'. So, they perceive 'kids movies' are retarded and are not to be taken seriously, unlike a 'real' movie.
We obviously watch things we like, but when you see such lame ass movies like Twilight making millions, when, gosh... I'll never get over how TERRIBLE the first book is and my brain cannot understand how, HOW?!, people can actually PAY to see it and then buy DVDs, Blu-Rays, posters, etc, etc... I get a headache and feel my braincells die just thinking about it. And, that's just an example of how easy is to manipulate teenagers and desperate-for-affection ladies/old-hags are. That's what they like, because that's what they are. If anyone were to take them to see something different, chances are they won't like it as much or at all.
Most blockbusters, in my honest opinion, are made for teenagers and/or people without a clear idea of what they want in their lives so they watch anything its made to be liked by undeveloped minds. All is good, I mean, teenagers are still discovering themselves and all that crap, so they have a free pass here; but if you're not on your teens and still eat all the crap they feed you thinking it's the best without questioning it then: SHAME ON YOU!.
Of course, not all of them are made that way, some aren't even expected to become one in the first place, and are very much well worth the time; or introduce new technologies, whatsoever.
Indie movies aren't really an exception or an epitome of freewill, like, there are a bunch of freaks or peeps with low self-esteem that need to only watch those kind of movies so they can feel special, different and smarter than the rest. Seriously... dude, if all you see is that, you can't even justify with a smart argument if they're better or not than commercial movies, you can't have a point of comparison at all. Trust me, not all indie movies are good and not all blockbusters are a waste for our intellects.
What we see is what we are, actually. I mean I do know some people who watch certain things just to play the cool kid, the ones who just watch the most publicized movies to feel ahead of the ones who don't give a crap, the ones who hate horror movies and think they're a waste of time or love horror movies and hate romance, etc. I know there are different kinds of movies because we all happen to be different and have diverse tastes for everything, that's fine, but when you go around prejudging and not trying new things out, then you know you have something to work with.
You can tell a lot of things about a person for the things they watch, the things they won't watch, and the way they react to those things.
Something I loved to do when I was in college was to randomly show up at the movies and watch whatever was playing next, I have to say it was always fun and there were no expectation so whatever it was, was just fine, plus, with a giant bag of popcorn you can't go wrong, never!
As always, just caring about one side of the spectrum and thinking that's the only way to go is a HUGE mistake a lot of people make. That shows, of course, closeness of mind and that must be so boring! I don't know about the rest of the world, but I'd hate to miss out, a bit of everything is always more enjoyable.
Keep your mind open and maybe, just maybe, you can find more than you think about yourself through movies and shiz than with the thing you currently watch, read, listen to, etc.
